Morphogenesis – A seminar about the creation of new social, economic, political forms

Franco Berardi: Disentanglement of a form is not a political problem.

With commentaries by Heidi Fast, Sakari Hänninen, Akseli Virtanen and the Robin Hood Collective

After our workshop series with Bifo in Helsinki – What is Revolution 2008, Mental ecology in cognitive capitalism 2009 and 2010, Exhausted subject, impossible community 2011, Creation of new social forms 2013, Aesthetic Dispositive of Semiocapitalism 2014 – the aim is clear: morphogenesis, creation of new forms.

The closed reality of financialization of economy and precarization of labor, the semiotic inflation and exhaustion of space, the death of the power of image and social life becoming-swarm have resulted in a morphostasis, loss of our singular ways of becoming.

This seminar is an attempt to think morphogenesis, form-generation, setting up a relation between the emergence of a form and social transformation. What form can the emergence of new take when the processes and risks of capitalistic exploitation are already in the soul and form of independent life?

The seminar is also a small tribute to Bifo’s influence on us.

The making and translation of his book Infolabor and Precarious State of Mind (Tietotyö ja prekaari mielentila published in 2006 as one of the first books in the important Polemos series). The elaboration of some of his concepts like “il ventre molle” (the soft belly of the Infosphere) behind the formation of Mollecular Organization. Our joint interest in the work of Félix Guattari, the new aesthetic paradigm and using art to rethink the concept of economy and practices of social organization in the semiocapitalist context. Future Art Base, European School for Social Imagination, Kassel Documenta13. And maybe most importantly his sensitivity to the real questions of organization that must correspond to our subjectivity that have been much behind the idea of Robin Hood… This has had an effect on us, maybe more important that he knows.

Franco Berardi also known as “Bifo”, is an Italian political theorist and activist who decided to do his doctoral studies in Finland with us – he wanted to “become a doctor before I die”, he said  :).  And – Phenomenology of the End is his thesis for a doctorate in philosophy.  For quite some time he has been working closely together with Mollecular organization, Future Art Base and Robin Hood in using contemporary art and contemporary artistic practices as examples, tools and inspiration of how to rethink the concept of economy and practices of social organization in the semiocapitalist context. Bifo is the founder of the legendary magazine A/traverso (1975-1981) and was part of the staff of Radio Alice, the first free radio station in Italy (1976-1978). Involved in the political movement of Autonomia in Italy during the 1970′s, he fled to Paris where he worked with Felix Guattari in the field of schizoanalysis. During the 1980′s he contributed to the magazines Semiotexte (New York), Chimerees (Paris), Metropoli (Rome) and Musica 80 (Milan). In the 1990′s he published Mutazione e Ciberpunk (Genoa, 1993), Cibernauti (Rome, 1994) and was the co-founder of the e-zine rekombinant.org. In the last decade he has published for example: Finance and Poetry (2013 Semiotexte), Félix (Palgrave McMillan London 2008) and The Soul at Work (Semiotexte, Los Angeles 2010) and Tietotyö ja prekaari mielentila [Infolabour and precarious states of mind] (Tutkijaliitto, Helsinki 2006).

And – Phenomenology of the End will be published by n-1 Publications in the end of 2014!
